If you’re in an area where you often lose power for days at a time, keeping it together with all your camping gear can make your life a lot easier too so you can go straight into survival mode when you need to without too much extra stress..
I bought this plain black shadowbox from Michael’s (using my 40% off coupon! These things can be expensive!)
with the hopes of using it for another baseball-themed project. That project morphed into something else so I ended up having this extra shadow box to use up..Although I like the way they look, I’m not usually a huge fan of shadow boxes cause they just seem kinda finicky to put together in a nice way.
Like you need all kinds of different little doodads to fill them up, you know?.I made this one with all of two things in it, Jack’s birth announcement and the little hat he got in the hospital, and I love it!.
Covering the backing first with a bold fabric helps to fill in the blank spots and really make for an eye-catching display.
So if you’re not very crafty, or just not feeling very crafty at the moment, this is a neat way to do it..I guess because of its cheapness, it had tarnished quicker than the door knob and it was exactly the kind of old-looking finish I was looking for.. OK, maybe pretty isn’t the right word for it.
But it’s more what I’m looking for to add character and stand out against my crisp new paint job.. Here’s how I worked my magic!.The first thing that needed to happen was to remove the clear varnish that was keeping the brass from tarnishing..
I read that a little vinegar mixed with salt and applied with a scouring pad does the trick.I’m not totally sure if it worked, but I did notice the finish becoming less shiny and yellowy and more raw looking.
